I wrote My Praxis Playlist Vol. I seven weeks ago. My old job was coming to an end. I was just starting Praxis. I was in a bittersweet place- saying goodbye to my students and friends that I had worked with for 5 years and embarking on a new but unknown adventure.
I'm in a different place now, and that calls for a new playlist! I've accepted a new job. I have a clearer picture of what my life is going to look like over the next 6 months, and I'm getting amped up and ready to crush it. My new mood is reflected in these five songs:
1. Go the Distance- Alan Menken and David Zippel
"I am on my way
I can go the distance
I don't care how far
Somehow I'll be strong
I know every mile will be worth my while"
This song is about leaving an old life behind and setting out in search of something greater. I will be moving 2,955 miles from Sacramento, California to St. Petersburg, Florida. I've never lived outside of California before and will be moving far away from all of my family. I'm nervous and excited, but just as the song says, I believe every mile will be worth my while. I know the decision to move across the country is the right one. This new job is going to be great. It will challenge me, it will teach me valuable new skills, it will put me in a great position for my career. And I have a feeling I'm going to love it.
2. Eye of the Tiger- Survivor
"Face to face, out in the heat
Hanging tough, staying hungry
They stack the odds still we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to survive"
I grew up watching the Rocky movies with my dad, and I've always loved a good transformational training montage because of it. This song always gets me in a mindset to be undaunted in the face of a challenge. To get right down to business with energy and determination. To push past my limits. To, in the moment of truth, rise up and take the glory.
3. 'Till I Collapse- Eminem
"This is your moment, and every single minute you spend
Tryna hold on to it because you may never get it again
So while you're in it, try to get as much shit as you can"
This song is about continuing on when you're running on fumes, when you think you have nothing left. I know the opportunity I'm getting through Praxis is important. I'm only going to do it once. I strive to keep this in the forefront of my mind every day. I want to get every last thing I can out of it, so I must put every last thing I have into it. It's now or never. Time to work harder than I ever have before.
4. Audition (The Fools Who Dream)- La La Land
"She captured a feeling
Sky with no ceiling
The sunset inside a frame"
My mom always says, "Success is built on inconvenience." When I look back over the last 6 months of my life, I see a lot of risks taken and a lot of inconvenience endured. I'm sure more than a few people were a little skeptical of my choice to upend my whole life. Many would say it's not worth it. Some would say it's crazy. I say that's what it takes. I will not settle for a mediocre life. I will not settle for a mediocre life. I want that sky with no ceiling feeling or nothing at all. If that requires that I be a little daring, a little crazy, well, then that's what I'm going to be.
5. Don't Worry About Me- Frances
"Cause if I fall, you'll fall
And if I rise, we rise together
When I smile, you'll smile
And don't worry about me, don't worry about me"
I've always wanted to up and move somewhere far away just to try it. Now I'm doing that, but I didn't anticipate how hard it would be to move so far from my family. I love them. I love being near them. I love spending time with them. I didn't think about the distance until now because I didn't want it to affect my decision. When I told my parents and my sister I was moving to Florida, I could tell they were sad, and that was hard. This song is for them. I don't want them to worry about me being far away. I'll be okay. They'll be okay. I'll be happy. They'll be happy. We'll still talk a lot. And I'll visit as much as I can.
